Multiple Fortune 500 and venture-backed technology companies are headquartered in Sunnyvale, including LinkedIn, Juniper Networks, Fortinet, and Intuitive Surgical.
Sunnyvale became a technology center because of deliberate decisions made in the 1950s. Stanford University, under provost Frederick Terman, established Stanford Industrial Park in 1951 to encourage its graduates and faculty to start companies on leased university land. The policy worked: companies arrived, talent aggregated, capital followed, and the mid-Peninsula transformed into what became known as Silicon Valley.
Today, major technology companies operate significant offices and headquarters in Sunnyvale itself. LinkedIn, the professional networking platform founded in 2002, is headquartered in Sunnyvale and employs thousands. Juniper Networks, founded in 1996, designs and sells networking equipment from its Sunnyvale headquarters. Fortinet, the cybersecurity company, was established in 2000 and is headquartered there. Intuitive Surgical, which developed the da Vinci surgical system, is also based in Sunnyvale. The presence of these established companies, alongside ongoing venture investment and startup activity, continues to define the city.
